What it does:
CleanText read╒s any text document and removes non-printing characters such as line feeds, horizontal tabs, etc, and replaces them with the appropriate characters that the Macintosh uses. It is primarily a ╥pre-editing╙ tool that will do the majority of the work for you prior to opening the document for final editing. To clean documents, just drag and drop as many as you want onto CleanText and it will automatically clean them in the order that they were placed. It╒s ideal for cleaning documents that you save from your Newsgroups, saved as a Text file from a html document or downloaded from a BBS.
The default creator (the information stored in the file to determine which application opens it) are Microsoft Word for wordprocessing and Microsoft Excel for spreadsheets. You may, however, choose the applications that you use so that the cleaned documents are automatically ready for opening by them.
Note: If you choose an integrated application such as ClarisWorks or Microsoft Works for opening your documents, the files that are cleaned will always be opened into a new wordprocessing document regardless of how you choose to clean them. This is not a problem though. If you have chosen to clean for a spreadsheet, just create a new spreadsheet document once the file has been read into a wordprocessing document and then copy and paste the information from the wordprocessing document into your spreadsheet. The information will automatically be placed into columns.
Setting your preferences:
Preferences are selected from the File menu.
╥Choose Wordprocessor╙ and ╥Choose Spreadsheet╙ will display the standard file open dialog allowing you to navigate your way to where your applications are stored. Once you have selected your Wordprocessor and Spreadsheet they are stored until you change them again. Defaults are set to Microsoft Word for Wordprocessor and Microsoft Excel for Spreadsheet.
Choose ╥Clean for Wordprocessor╙ when you are preparing to edit a document that should be formatted for a Wordprocessor.
Choose ╥Clean for Spreadsheet╙ when you are preparing a document that has columns of data that need to have Tabs placed between the columns.
╥Auto Save╙ will automatically save your documents with ╥(CT)╙ added to the original name. Default is ╥Auto Save╙ off.
╥Auto Quit╙ will make CleanText automatically quit once it has cleaned your text file. Default is ╥Auto Quit╙ off.
If ╥Show Open Dialog╙ is checked, then a the standard file open dialog will automatically be displayed when you launch CleanText. Otherwise you will have to open the file by selecting ╥Open File to Clean╙ from the ╥File╙ menu. Default is ╥Show Open Dialog╙ off.

Completely re-wrote CleanText so there is no longer a limit on the size of text file you can clean. You are only limited to cleaning files that will fit into the memory you have allocated to CleanText. The minimum and suggested size is set to 256K and is enough memory to clean the majority of files you may download. You may set the suggested size to a higher number if CleanText tells you there isn╒t enough memory to open the file. To reset the size, select CleanText by clicking on it once and then selecting ╥Get Info╙ from the ╥File╙ menu. Type in a larger number in the suggested size to increase the amount of memory CleanText allocates when it is launched.
I have downloaded and tested every utility I could find that is similar to CleanText and have found that they either don╒t remove all of the characters they should or they don╒t handle extremely large files.

I wanted CleanText to be an application I╒d want to use. I personally don╒t like splash screens so I removed the splash screen from when the application starts up. I also made one of the menu preference options more clear. Auto Name & Save automatically saves the file once it╒s cleaned with the word ╥converted╙ added to it. Documents cleaned have always been auto named.
I also fixed a bug that wouldn╒t allow CleanText to receive the ╥quit╙ apple event.

What╒s new:
Added an option to automatically save the documents that are cleaned. If you choose this option then documents are automatically saved with the original name plus ╥converted╙.
Bug Fixes:
In previous version if you cleaned more than one file without quitting the application then the data from previous files was written out in subsequent files that were cleaned. This has been fixed.
Apple Events now work properly so you can drag and drop as many documents as you want on CleanText to have them cleaned.

I found some places where I wasn╒t checking for disk errors at the time I should have been. Hopefully if you have problems with CleanText, it should return an appropriate error code at the right time. I also removed some code that was loading but not being used. It could have potentially caused some problems.
Note: When sending bug reports please include your computer model and current operating system version. Thanks to those who have sent me e-mail listing the bugs they╒ve encountered.
The temporary file was being placed in the same place as the original instead of the application folder and then you had CleanText temp files scattered all over your disk.
